Hi, could anyone tell me how to implement toon shading with 3d studio max r4 with no 3rd part plug-ins? thanx
I had a go before I stopped using 3dsMAX 3.

I used a tutorial similar to this one.

There''s really two things in making your render look cell shaded.

1. Flat textures! You''ll note that the tutorial uses the FallOff map combined with 100% self-illumination on textures to achieve this.

2. Outlined textures. This is the little black outline that makes things look like "cells". The tutorial given above does this using the falloff map as well, but I think that''s kind of dodgy.

here''s a more complete way. You can use the first tutorial for the STEP 2 rendering of this one.

good luck with TRYING to use 3D Studio Max. its a tough cookie to crack. i don''t use it anymore, because its really complicated. i might look into it again though...
Guns N Roses!
3dsmax is quite easy after you''ve used it for a short while.
it''s like learning any other high end application.. just
gotta read some tutorials, books, whatever...
i like 3dcafe.com and max3d.com.. both have excellent
tutorials.
