heres some help on 2d sprites. go to http://classicgaming.com/ff1 and go to graphics, or monsters, etc. that site has many animated and sequenced sprites to look at. though they may be very choppy (final fantasy 1 was an NES game) it can start you on your way to becoming a sprite maker. you can study them and enlarge them by about 200% to see how they were made. If you want a sprite maker other than photoshop there is paint. or you can go to http://www.ziron.com/links/grutil.htm and look at all the game programming aids that site has. (sprite makers/animators, engines, tile makers, terrain makers, etc.)
How do you make sprites in paint?
I just zoom in 800%, click view->zoom->show grid, view->zoom->show thumbnail. Then paint it pixel by pixel.
