3D Games Interactive Animation

Apologies upfront for a newbie question... but... If 3DS Max is used to produce neat animations of say a person with moveable limbs, how generally do game programmers use this within their program so that if the gameplayer presses a certain key the left arm goes up or another key for the arm to go down etc? ie: interactive graphics. My fear is that for all the high-level animation possible in 3DS Max etc, all the high-level stuff may be lost when you put it into a game environment - needing complex DirectX type coding to make it all work. Does a SDK do all of this for you? Any help appreciated. Cheers, Desk-man

You can either record an animation (with keyframes) in 3DSMax and export it as part of the model or handle all of the animation within the engine via Direc3D. If you choose the latter, the DirectX SDK comes with some samples for simple animation I believe.

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply.

I gather from your response that your program may be able to access the relevant key frames to react to the user''s input.

... something to investigate me thinks...

Cheers
